ALAN STEWART

We have some very sad news to share with you all. On Thursday evening, Alan Stewart passed away after being ill for quite some time. Fiona and close family were by his side.

Alan was a serving member of our committee, past Vice Chair and Chair, and to date, our show manager. He was a very valued friend to the flatcoat community, always with a smile and cheery disposition. Just one of life's genuinely good people.

Although Fiona handled the dogs, Alan always gave a good account of himself if he had to venture into the ring. He loved his dogs! He loved his family and his friends. The show scene just won't be the same without him.

To Fiona and his loved ones, we send our sincere condolences.

RIP Alan. You will be sorely missed!

GLADYS OGILVY-SHEPHERD MBE

1923 - 2025

It is with much sadness that we have learned of the death of Gladys Ogilvy-Shepherd MBE, a much valued and honorary member of The Flatcoated Retriever Club of Scotland.

Although she had other breeds previously, Gladys was known for her Rottweilers and her flatcoats and showed under the Gbos affix.

Above all Gladys was a staunch supporter of the club, allowing us the use of her land for various fun days and always welcoming everyone with a smile and warm words.

Her love of animals extended beyond dogs and in 2015 she was awarded an MBE for services to Animal Welfare and Veterinary Education.

Prior to this in 2014, Gladys attended the opening of The Gladys Ogilvy Shepherd Interventional Radiology Suite at the Dick Vet. Her support of this service was instrumental in equipping the facility, allowing for the treatment of illnesses that may have been previously considered untreatable or in need of more invasive surgery.

A wonderfully kind and inspirational woman, Gladys passed away at the grand old age of 102 years. To her loved ones, we send our deep condolences.

Health Information

Some updates from the Kennel Club - November 2025

1. The BVA/KC Eye Scheme, Glaucoma Survey

The BVA in conjunction with the Kennel Club have published a glaucoma survey to learn more about whether screened dogs have gone on to be affected with glaucoma later in life. You may have received an email from the Kennel Club about the survey already, a link to the survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BVA_KCgonioscopy

2. Recording International Health Scheme Screening Results.

Please see attached a summary of this update, the same information has been uploaded to the Society website health pages on the KC Information page: https://www.flatcoated-retriever-society.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Recording-International-Health-Scheme-Screening-Results.pdf

3. The Kennel Club are holding a webinar about congenital heart disease in dogs on Wednesday 12th November from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, which is freely available to anyone who would like to find out more.

In partnership with the Veterinary Cardiovascular Society (VCS), The Kennel Club’s Health team are pleased to invite you to the third webinar in their series of free webinars about heart disease in dogs. This session will build on the insights from our previous introductory webinar, presented by Dr Hannah Stephenson, and acquired heart disease webinar, presented by Dr Emily Dutton. In this follow-up webinar, expert cardiologist Dr Chris Linney will take an in-depth look at congenital heart diseases (present at birth) and how they differ from the more common acquired heart diseases that develop later in life.
